Classic City Line ferries waiting for passengers in Eminönü. They wait their turn, accompanied by city teas and coffees in their rows of seats, what stories, my life novels are housed in a riot of sounds at Istanbul’s classics of veteran, coal-fired steamboats. Haydarpaşa, Kadıköy, Eminönü, Üsküdar, Adalar, Beşiktaş, Bosphorus piers come and go all day long. World views on the terraces of the first place, the second place, and the windows. The building on the far right ahead is the Haydarpaşa Train Station, and the buildings on the left are the Haydarpaşa harbor silos. Landscapes stretching from the shores of Europe to the shores of Asia. Continents meeting coast to coast. Eurasia. Coastal road winding along the walls, fishing boats are on the way to sell the fish they caught in the sea, while the ships are waiting in line to enter the Bosphorus at anchor. Boats waiting in line to enter the Bosphorus off Sarayburnu in the Sea of Marmara and fishing boats around them. Different worlds. Some people’s worlds are iron-packed ships, some are wooden boats. Different aspirations and preoccupations of catching fish from the seabed and transporting the cargo over the sea. Medar-ı Maişet Motoru is the name of Sait Faik’s first novel.
